Most of the medicine we know today is based on the placebo controlled trial. To be sure a treatment is effective, there needs to be a comparison between people whose only difference is if they are or are not taking the drug. In this test, both groups should have the thought they are taking the real drug. This is supposed to guard against effects of expectation.
According to Beatrice Golomb, MD, PhD as the University of California, this standard has a fundamental problem. She explains by adding, there isn’t anything actually known to be physiologically inert. There are also no regulations as to what a placebo is made of. What is in a placebo is often determined by the makers of the drug being studied. These makers have a vested interest in the outcome of the test.
Nobody knows how often the results of a study are affected by the ingredient of the placebo. This leaves doctors wondering how a standard can be be created when less then ten percent of cases disclose what is in the placebo. Golomb added that a good or bad effect of the placebo can be misleading of a positive or negative effect of the drug.
